LIVING CLARENCE’S LEGACY AND DREAM: A Tribute to Clarence Jones (January 9, 1931-May 22, 2026) by Reverend Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr This past month, we lost a giant—not only in the fight for civil rights and racial justice, but also within our organization. As Spill the Honey’s Inaugural Chair, Clarence Jones worked closely with our co-founder, Dr. Shari Rogers, to support and strengthen our organization. He believed deeply in the power of Black/Jewish partnership to move our country forward and devoted himself to realizing the full potential of this alliance. In the introduction to his book, The Last of the Lions: An African American Journey in Memoir (2023), Jones wrote, “the mission of Spill the Honey aligns so completely with what is central to my life’s continuing work: fighting against prejudice and for equality. Spill the Honey focuses on fostering and strengthening relationships between the Black and Jewish communities. It seeks to tell the stories of the decades of cooperation between Jews and Blacks that enabled the signing into law of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and many other instances of forward progress in social justice. . . The Holocaust and the enduring legacy of slavery have much in common, and I know the historic connections between these two communities can serve as a bedrock for teaching tolerance.”
